Norway 2024 (Part 3) – in the land of the moose

Today I'm once again presenting one of these series that I didn't even have on my mind before. In Norway, it is well known that you can seek out herds of reindeer and musk oxen (with luck or skill...), but this is not so easy with mooses. Even if they have favoured areas, it usually remains a matter of chance encounters with individual animals, especially at dusk and at greater distances.

This year, however, with a bit of luck, I was able to dedicate an entire series to these amazing animals 😀

This time, we didn't get to see the reindeer or the musk oxen. We would have liked to visit the latter again, but unlike the last two years, the animals were a few kilometres further away, at least if you wanted to avoid the infamous railway bridge. That just didn't fit with our little Ben, so we skipped it.

Another option were the herds in the higher regions, for which we travelled once by bus to Snohetta. We saw some musk oxen there, but we did not like the habitat photographically - at least when you're there in autumn, surrounded by colourful birch trees. And incidentally, due to the last bus stop time, you can't take the very last evening light with you if you don't want to sleep in a tent…

So I decided to work on a series about moose in the beautiful autumn landscape this year, as this was a good option. Bull moose were rare again this year and could usually only be seen from a distance, but this time there were two cow moose, each with a calf, which repeatedly visited the spots that were accessible to moose photographers and showed relatively little shyness. Now we just needed good light 😉

Christina also loves moose photography and we had a lot of fun during the sessions and really great moments with these impressive animals. We even had the best situation on her birthday, you will see the pictures at the end.

There were also two little surprises waiting for me in the moose area: as a nature photographer interested in ornithology, I was absolutely delighted to see a hawk owl one evening and to be able to photograph it. What a beautiful bird! And I had a similar experience with my first encounter with a black-throated diver, which allowed me to get at least one picture.

I hope you enjoy this last part of my Norway series. All pictures in this third part were taken with a Nikon Z8, alternatively with my Nikon Z 600 TC and the Nikon Plena. Have fun with the pictures!

Many greetings,
Thomas
